The search for Ji Moon reaches a breaking point in Sugar Season 2 Episode 4. John Sugar finally comes face to face with the corrupt cop who has been hunting Ji since the beginning. Tony Dalton joins the cast as Lieutenant Vega, a sheriff with a dark secret and zero hesitation about killing anyone who gets in his way. The episode, titled “Off 15,” delivers the season’s most tense moments yet as Sugar makes a dangerous choice to keep Ji alive. Colin Farrell continues to lead the Apple TV+ series with a performance that balances calm intelligence with quiet desperation.

What Ji Moon Witnessed at the Hospital
The episode opens with a flashback set eight days before the current events. This cold sequence finally shows exactly how Ji Moon (Raymond Lee) became a target. Ji enters St. Anthony’s City Hospital with help from his nurse friend Hannah McDaniel (Nona Parker Johnson). She gives him a hospital badge and a thermos, allowing him to access the locked medication room. Ji steals a handful of pills and fills the thermos, planning to sell the drugs for money.
Everything goes wrong when Ji tries to escape. He hides in a hospital room occupied by Chuy, a gang member who is already weak and hooked up to machines. Chuy tries to warn Ji about the man in the bathroom, but he cannot speak clearly. Ji hides in the closet just as Lieutenant Vega steps out. Vega speaks Spanish to Chuy, telling him he is there to give him peace. He closes off Chuy’s breathing tube, and Chuy passes away while Vega tells him not to be afraid.
Ji watches the entire murder through a crack in the closet door. He makes a noise, and Vega opens the closet to find him hiding. Vega shakes Ji’s thermos full of pills, takes a photo of Ji, and tells him to run. He does not kill Ji immediately because making him disappear at the hospital would create too many questions. Instead, he lets Ji escape, knowing he can track him down later away from cameras and witnesses. This decision sets off the entire season’s chase.
Sugar Faces Lieutenant Vega
Back in the present, Sugar sits in an interrogation room with two sheriffs after the raid at the Ez4 compound. One of the sheriffs is Vega, the same man from the hospital. Sugar notices Vega checking his watch and recognizes the movement from the hospital security footage. He knows he is sitting across from Chuy’s murderer.
Vega tells a casual story about actor Jude Law and a ride-along, trying to keep the mood light. After the other officer leaves, Vega turns off the recorder and asks how Sugar identified him. Sugar explains that it was the way Vega moved and checked his watch that gave him away. He also tells Vega he knows about the “Fire Sale” and understands that Vega must kill Ji because Ji witnessed Chuy’s murder.
At least three other sheriffs watch from behind the two-way mirror as Sugar accuses Vega of covering up his drug business and the murder. Sugar expects a fight, but Vega admits that someone called and told him to leave Sugar alone. Sugar has a powerful “guardian angel” protecting him from the corrupt officers. However, Vega makes it clear that Ji is still fair game and must die. Sugar refuses to back down.
Sugar Catches Charlotte Snooping
The episode includes a strange side plot involving Charlotte (Laura Donnelly), the woman Sugar has been seeing. Sugar returns to his hotel room and feels something is off. He checks his security cameras and sees Charlotte looking through his room, even going through his drawers. Sugar immediately goes to the hotel bar where Charlotte is drinking with two colleagues. He confronts her in front of her friends, asking why she was in his room.
Charlotte claims the housekeeper let her in so she could leave him a note. She says she left the note inside a magazine on his nightstand. Sugar returns to his room and finds the flirty note right where she said it would be. The scene raises several questions. Why would housekeeping let someone into a guest’s room? Why not slip the note under the door? And why hide it inside a magazine in the bedroom? The show does not fully explain Charlotte’s actions, leaving viewers wondering if she is hiding something bigger.
The Race to Save Ji
The episode shifts into high gear as Sugar and his team race to find Ji before Vega does. Everyone watches Hannah, expecting Ji to contact her to sell the stolen drugs. Vega visits Hannah’s house and presents himself as a guardian angel who wants to protect Ji from dangerous people. He convinces Hannah to arrange a meeting with Ji so his men can bug Ji’s car.
Sugar and Val (Sasha Calle), his new protégée, race to the mall where the drug deal is supposed to happen. However, the episode has a logic gap. Val has been watching Hannah’s house 24/7, but she somehow misses Vega showing up, knocking on the door, going inside, and speaking with Hannah long enough to make an arrangement. She notices when Hannah drives off but not when Vega drives up. The show does not explain this oversight.
Sugar’s Deadly Gamble
The final act belongs entirely to John Sugar. He tracks Ji to a remote cabin where Ji has been hiding with Tyler (played by Jin Ha’s character Danny’s associate). Sugar finds Ji passed out with a gun nearby. He knows Vega and his corrupt officers are closing in.
Sugar realizes there is only one way to save Ji. He deliberately overdoses Ji, making him appear dead. When Vega and his team arrive at the cabin, they find what looks like a dead body. Sugar has tricked them into believing Ji is gone. Once the danger passes, Sugar administers Narcan and performs CPR, bringing Ji back to life.
It is a risky and morally complicated decision. Sugar is not the strongest man in the room or the most heavily armed. He simply thinks several moves ahead of everyone else. The sequence is tense and emotional, easily the episode’s standout moment. This gamble shows Sugar’s commitment to saving lives, following the first rule of his people: “Thou shall not kill”.

Ji Survives, But the Danger Continues
The ending gives Sugar an important victory. Ji survives thanks to Sugar’s quick thinking, denying Vega the witness he desperately wants to eliminate. However, the episode confirms that the corruption surrounding the case goes far beyond one crooked cop. Exposing Vega will not be enough to end the conspiracy.
With Ji finally alive and able to tell his story, Sugar now has his best chance to uncover who is really pulling the strings. But doing so may put everyone he cares about in even greater danger. The episode makes it clear that Sugar is fighting an entire network of corruption, not just one man.
Jin Ha continues to deliver strong work as Danny, the boxer whose missing brother started this whole investigation. His frustration finally breaks through in a confrontation with Sugar, and the moment lands because the show has earned it. The partnership between Sugar and Danny has an easy rhythm that avoids the constant bickering many detective shows mistake for chemistry.
Colin Farrell remains the reason this show works. He plays Sugar as someone whose empathy is not a character quirk but a genuine operating principle. Even when he is forced into a desperate gamble, the scene reads as an act of care dressed up as tactics rather than a cold calculation.
Tony Dalton brings a chilling presence to the role of Lieutenant Vega. His character is calm, calculating, and completely ruthless. He knows the rules of the system and knows exactly how to bend them. Vega is not just a gangster with a badge. He is a man who understands how to use the law as a weapon.
The episode has some flaws. The Charlotte subplot feels like a plot mechanism rather than a natural extension of who these two people are. There are also logic gaps in how Vega visits Hannah without Val noticing. But the episode’s strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. The central investigation now has teeth and a genuine sense of danger.
Sugar Season 2 Episode 4 delivers one of the season’s most suspenseful and satisfying endings. The show has finally found its gear, and the pacing now matches the stakes. With Ji alive and able to testify, the second half of the season promises even more tension and danger.
