Apple TV’s space drama For All Mankind finished its fifth season with two big character deaths and a finale that left fans searching for translation tools. The showrunners Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert sat down with Collider to explain why they killed off Kelly Baldwin (Cynthy Wu) and what that final cryptic message in Cyrillic actually means.

The Season 5 finale, titled “This Land Is Our Land,” brought the Mars revolution story to a close while sending the Sojourner crew to Titan. Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman) died earlier in the season after his cancer spread, refusing treatment and choosing to end his life surrounded by family memories. But the finale delivered another Baldwin family loss that even the writers did not plan from the start.

Why the Showrunners Decided to Kill Both Ed and Kelly in One Season

Nedivi admitted that killing two Baldwins in the same season was not the original plan. The team knew Ed would die going into Season 5, but Kelly’s death came up during the writing process.

“It came up pretty early, and I remember us dismissing it for that very reason. We said, ‘Well, we can’t kill both Ed and Kelly in the same season. That’s crazy.’ But honestly, the closer we got to the finale and writing it, the more it made sense,” Nedivi explained.

In the final episode, Kelly Baldwin discovers microbial life on Titan. A mechanical issue leaves the crew with only enough oxygen for two people to return to their ship. As the commander, Kelly chooses to stay behind. She walks into a methane lake as bioluminescent microbes light up around her.

Wolpert described finding the right tone for Kelly’s final scene: “We were looking for a way to basically not have it just be depressing. It was such an emotional, grief-stricken moment. The self-sacrifice was beautiful, but it was tragic. To give her that last glimpse of, ‘Oh, this is bigger than I ever could have conceived it was,’ and then her walking into that pool of liquid methane and seeing the life that she’s been looking for decades surrounding her felt like a really nice combination of sadness and joy.”

Will Aliens Appear in For All Mankind Season 6

The finale’s bioluminescent sequence raised a big question from fans. Does this mean aliens are coming to the show? Nedivi and Wolpert answered that question directly in their Slashfilm interview.

Wolpert explained the science behind the scene: “As she’s stepping into that lake, her steps are triggering these microbes to glow and surround her in a way that people do here on Earth in terms of stepping into the ocean and being surrounded by those microbes. We think they found this one little sample of microbial life on Titan, and what she steps into at the end is that there’s so much more. It’s not just this one little puddle — this moon is teeming with life.”

Nedivi confirmed the show will introduce alien life in Season 6, but with a grounded approach. “When it came to this discovery at the end, we did a ton of research to make sure this feels grounded. It’s sort of become more science fiction, a little more fantastical, but I still feel, despite that, we try very hard to keep it as close to science as possible,” he said.

The showrunners promised a realistic portrayal of extraterrestrial life, avoiding typical science fiction tropes.

Breaking Down That Cryptic Final Scene with the Cyrillic Message

The season ended with a time jump into the 2020s. A mysterious abandoned space shuttle comes back to life. A message written in Cyrillic appears on the screen. Fans immediately started using Google Translate to figure out what it said.

Nedivi stayed vague about the meaning: “It’s something I’ll say we learned from the Coen brothers, and working on Fargo was, ‘Embrace the mystery.’ I think that was intentional. We really love this idea of throughout the show, we have Easter eggs and little moments, and I think we wanted to give a tease a little bit without giving away too much.”

He added that the Nikulov name appears in the message, which is Sergei Nikulov’s surname. “I would just say it’s also something that might come into play next season, as all the flash forwards have, and it’s something that, as writers, we were very excited about exploring.”

What Kelly’s Discovery Means for the Final Season

The discovery of life on Titan changes everything for the show’s final season. Nedivi said the team always knew where this storyline was going.

“I think the show is always pointed towards a more hopeful future. I think this season in particular has been quite dark with what happens on Mars, but we felt this storyline was the thing that would carry us into the final season of the show,” Nedivi explained.

The crew members who left Titan believe they only have a small sample of microbial life. They do not realize how much life actually exists on the moon. This misunderstanding will drive the story forward in Season 6.

For All Mankind has already been renewed for a sixth and final season. Star City, a spin-off series set in the Soviet space program during the 1960s, premiered on Apple TV on May 29. The spin-off explores the alternate history from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of cosmonauts, engineers, and intelligence officers.

All episodes of For All Mankind Season 5 are now streaming on Apple TV. The final season does not have a release date yet.
